I recall a Ba...Rico was my first favorite player.

I recall a Baseball Digest article from 1970 about Carty. His English was so poor when he first arrived, he said he ordered "chick-on" every meal for about 3 months. He learned "hom-bur-ger" and ate those for the next 3 months. He said that he couldn't stand the thought of eating either anymore.

He was a slow runner, making his 31 game hitting streak in 1970 even more impressive...probably not a cheap hit in the bunch. His average was over .400 until mid June, which caused the write in campaign for the All Star team. He had 23 homers by the break, but only 2 the rest of the year. Either they learned to throw him breaking stuff, or he wore down as the season progressed. He still won the batting title that year at .366RLoganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03349859075021438053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766775162963853142.post-67682628700183970672010-07-26T12:45:04.624-04:002010-07-26T12:45:04.624-04:00Bob - I guess that's better than what Tim Rain...Bob - I guess that's better than what Tim Raines used to carry in his uniform pants...

Marc- I've seen both nicknames in various sources. I was going by Baseball-Reference, but I suppose I should defer to someone who actually watched him play. ;)Kevinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01334533396646438555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766775162963853142.post-77732036437702584782010-07-21T13:36:04.165-04:002010-07-21T13:36:04.165-04:00I'm a Braves fan and I remember Rico Carty as ...I'm a Braves fan and I remember Rico Carty as being one of the best pure hitters I ever saw (although a terrible outfielder). He once hit a home run over the CF wall at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh that was over 450 feet away in a day when not many hitters could hit a ball that far. It was unbelievable.

One correction. I recall his nickname being "Beeg Boy" not "Beeg Mon" although that obviously has some unfortunate connotations.Marcnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766775162963853142.post-56345630920364721062010-07-19T17:36:23.512-04:002010-07-19T17:36:23.512-04:00Rico and his wallet at the Baseball Page.Rico and his wallet at the Baseball Page.Commishbobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766775162963853142.post-23654958605237384742010-07-17T01:01:57.811-04:002010-07-17T01:01:57.811-04:00According to Jim Bouton in one of his books Rico C...According to Jim Bouton in one of his books Rico Carty didn't trust many people and therefore carried his wallet in the back pocket of his uni when he played.Commishbobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766775162963853142.post-67210580304083811572010-07-16T07:33:05.475-04:002010-07-16T07:33:05.475-04:00Jim - Right you are!
